Belk Department Stores is Just "Scratching" Surface for "Back to School" Sales
...From the Case Files...
Company: Belk Department Stores
Objective: To stand out and boost "Back to School" traffic.
Back-to-school shopping is the second largest retail sales season, accounting for $8.5+ billion in clothing sales. With so much at stake, retailers and brands are fighting for their share of this lucrative market – and nothing connects with tweens, teens and college students better than a chance to win scratch off game, music downloads, or personalized skins for their cell phone, iPad and laptop.
But with so many customers expecting sales and so many stores offering the same boring discounts, how was a national retail chain going to make their stores stand out from the rest? By offering every customer a Scratch and Win card worth discounts and free merchandise. Everyone was a winner! The key – customers could not scratch off their card until they were at the register. They had the chance to win free merchandise and discounts of 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% off merchandise.
Additionally Belk’s gave away cards good for 5 music downloads to customers who purchased $40 or more in the Juniors’ and Young Men’s Departments.
Big Sales and Happy Customers. The program was repeated following year, by offering 3 free music downloads, along with a bonus instant-win scratch off game that gave recipients the chance to instantly win an iPod.
